Energy Videos
We are going to spend the rest of our time studying Energy and it's importance in biological systems. Next week we will spend our time discussing and studying ATP, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, and the chemistry of compost. This will involve extensive reading as usual, but you will also have a chance to research on your own and flex your creative muscles.
Your job on Friday and over the weekend is to read Chapter 4 and view the short videos linked below.

Wednesday 7/13
Good morning all,
I won’t be in today as I am ill. Not to worry, there is plenty of work to do.
Today during class you need to work on the following assignments:
1. Read chapter 3 and annotate. I will collect your notes tomorrow.
2. Answer the questions at the end of chapter 3.
3. Carry out the Visual observations of the effect of salinity on algal cells activity on pages 3-4 of the lab handout. Work in pairs and follow the directions precisely.
Remember:
You will need to mix a 10% salt water solution. There is a small plastic test tube with a lid over on the supply table. Place 9 drops of dH2O and 1 drop of the 100% NaCl solution. This will probably be enough for the whole class.
Do not get any liquid (even just water) on the microscope lenses. Always start viewing your specimen at low power (4x objective lens) and focus using the COARSE focusing knob. If you then switch to a higher power only focus using the FINE focusing knob.
If you are not confident about your microscopy skills, have another student help you.
You will have to dig around in the blue bucket to find the red algae. Feel free to repeat the activity with other types of algae in the bucket as well.
4. Your notes for Chapter 2 will also be collected tomorrow.
Manage your time well in class today. You should be working during class time. Do not use your phone, wander around, sleep, draw etc. except during break. Robert, Mele, and others will be subbing for me today and they will excuse you for break and at noon. Your lab equipment must be cleaned and put away and your table cleaned up before you leave for the day.
Have a great day and I will see you tomorrow,
Lia
